How to use the tip calculator
- Enter the bill total from your receipt.
- Choose a tip: tap 15%, 18%, 20% or 25%, or type any percentage.
- Enter how many people are splitting the bill.
- Optional: add the tax amount and tick Tip on the amount before tax, or tick rounding so everyone pays a whole-dollar amount.
The compare table shows the tip at several rates side by side, so you can pick the one that fits the service.
How to calculate a tip
A $84.50 bill with a 20% tip, split between 2 people.
Tip = 84.50 × 0.20 = $16.90. Total = $101.40. Each person pays $50.70.
Quick mental math: for 20%, move the decimal one place left and double it ($84.50 → $8.45 → $16.90). For 15%, take 10% and add half of it again.
How much to tip in the U.S.
Tipping customs vary, but these are common U.S. guidelines:
| Service | Typical tip |
|---|---|
| Sit-down restaurant | 18–20% for good service, 15% for basic |
| Bartender | $1–2 per drink, or 18–20% of the tab |
| Food delivery | 15–20%, at least $3–5 |
| Takeout and counter service | Optional, 0–10% |
| Taxi or rideshare | 15–20% |
| Hair salon or barber | 15–20% |
| Hotel housekeeping | $2–5 per night |
Many restaurants add an automatic gratuity of about 18–20% for large groups. Check the receipt before you add a tip on top.
Should you tip on the pre-tax amount?
Etiquette guides usually say to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, since tax isn't part of the service. In practice many people tip on the total for simplicity. The difference is small. On a $100 meal with 8% tax, a 20% tip is $20.00 on the subtotal or $21.60 on the total. Enter the tax and tick the box to see both.
Splitting the bill fairly
An even split is simplest when everyone ordered about the same. If orders were very different, have each person tip on their own share: enter each person's part of the bill with 1 person. Rounding up each share to a whole dollar makes paying in cash easier, and the extra goes to your server.
Need a different kind of split, like 60/40? The ratio calculator turns any ratio into percentage shares.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 20% tip?
Multiply the bill by 0.20. For a $45 bill, the tip is $9 and the total is $54. A shortcut: find 10% by moving the decimal one place left, then double it.
What is a good tip at a restaurant?
In the U.S., 18–20% of the bill is standard for good table service, 15% for basic service, and more for exceptional service.
Do you tip on the total with tax?
Either is accepted. Etiquette experts recommend tipping on the pre-tax amount, but many people tip on the total. Enter the tax and tick “Tip on the amount before tax” to see the difference.
How do I split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill to get the total, then divide by the number of people. A $120 bill with an 18% tip is $141.60, or $35.40 each for four people.
How much is a 15% tip on $50?
A 15% tip on $50 is $7.50, making the total $57.50.
